Start the trek from Nyakalengija trailhead (1,615m). Hike through tropical rainforest along the Mubuku River. Spot primates and tropical birds. Arrive at Nyabitaba camp with views of the Portal Peaks.
Cross the Mubuku River on a wooden bridge and enter the bamboo-heather zone. Steep ascent through giant heather forest draped in moss. Camp at the confluence of the Bujuku and Mubuku rivers.
Trek through the "Bigo Bog" boardwalks and enter the spectacular Afro-alpine zone. Giant groundsels and lobelias tower around you. Stunning views of Mount Baker and Mount Stanley. Camp at Bujuku Lake.
Pre-dawn start for the summit push. Scramble over rocks and traverse the Stanley Glacier to reach Margherita Peak, Africa's third-highest point. Panoramic views across the DRC and Uganda. Descend to Elena Hut for the night.
Descend through the stunning Kitandara Valley with its twin emerald lakes. Pass through Scott Elliot Pass and descend to Guy Yeoman camp through the heather zone.
Final descent through the bamboo and rainforest zones back to Nyakalengija. Collect your certificate of achievement. Transfer to your hotel in Kasese or Fort Portal.
Traveling with kids can be stressful but the team made it seamless. The children loved the boat cruise and the guides were great with them.
The game drives were fantastic and we saw all of the Big Five. The lodge was comfortable. Only downside was a slight delay on the second day, but overall a wonderful experience.
