Overview
The Masai Mara and the Serengeti are essentially the same ecosystem divided by the Kenya-Tanzania border. But the experience differs significantly.
Wildlife
Both offer Big Five sightings, but the Serengeti's vast size means more remote wilderness. The Mara is smaller and often provides more concentrated animal sightings.
The Migration
The wildebeest spend July–October in the Mara for the dramatic river crossings. They're in the Serengeti from December–June for calving season.
Cost
Kenya's Mara tends to be more affordable with easier access from Nairobi. Tanzania's park fees are higher, but the experience feels more exclusive.
Our Verdict
Choose the Mara for accessibility and dramatic crossings. Choose the Serengeti for vast wilderness and calving season. Better yet — do both!
