About This Tour

Akagera National Park on Rwanda's eastern border is one of Africa's great conservation success stories. Lions were reintroduced in 2015 and black rhinos in 2017, completing Rwanda's Big Five for the first time in decades.

The park's varied landscape of savannah, swamps, and lakes supports enormous hippo populations, large elephant herds, zebras, topi, and one of Africa's best populations of shoebill stork.

This 3-day safari combines morning and evening game drives with a spectacular Lake Ihema boat safari — one of the best hippo and waterbird experiences in East Africa.

Day 1
Day 1 — Kigali to Akagera National Park

Depart Kigali after breakfast (approx. 3 hrs). Arrive at the park southern entrance and begin an afternoon game drive. Check in to the park lodge.

Day 2 — Full Day Game Drives & Lake Ihema Boat Safari

Early morning game drive searching for lion, rhino, and elephant. Midday boat safari on Lake Ihema — massive hippo pods, Nile crocodiles, and shoebill storks. Afternoon drive through the northern sector.

Day 3 — Morning Drive & Return to Kigali

Sunrise game drive for final wildlife sightings and photography. Breakfast at the lodge and return drive to Kigali, arriving by afternoon.

Decent but could improve

The wildlife sightings were good, but communication before the trip could have been better. The vehicle was a bit old. Food was excellent though.
