About This Tour

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park sits on three of the eight Virunga Volcanoes and is home to both habituated mountain gorilla families and the rare golden monkey. On consecutive days you will track each species through bamboo forest and volcanic slopes.

The golden monkey (Cercopithecus kandti) is listed as endangered and found only in the Virunga range — its striking golden-orange coat flashing through the bamboo is a photographer's dream.

Combined with a volcano hike and visits to the Batwa pygmy community, this is one of Uganda's most enriching short expeditions.

Day 1
Day 1 — Transfer to Mgahinga

Depart Kampala/Entebbe and drive south-west to Kisoro, gateway to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Dramatic Virunga views on arrival. Check in and evening briefing.

Day 2
Day 2 — Golden Monkey Trekking

Morning briefing at park HQ, then trek into the bamboo forest to find the habituated golden monkey troop. Spend one hour watching these vivacious primates leap through the canopy. Afternoon Batwa cultural experience.

Day 3
Day 3 — Mount Sabinyo Volcano Hike

Full-day hike up Mount Sabinyo (3,645m) — the ancient eroded volcano whose peaks mark the meeting point of Uganda, Rwanda, and DRC. Strenuous but rewarding, with panoramic Virunga views.

Day 4
Day 4 — Mountain Gorilla Trekking

Trek with armed rangers through bamboo and afro-montane forest to find the habituated gorilla family. Spend one magical hour with the gorillas. Celebration lunch at the lodge.

Day 5
Day 5 — Lake Bunyonyi & Return to Kampala

After breakfast, depart Kisoro and stop at Lake Bunyonyi for a canoe ride and lunch. Continue the return drive to Kampala/Entebbe, arriving by evening.
